News from 3MS: Susan’s 1 Million Steps from her front door

In lockdown 2020, Susan walked a million steps from her own front door for 3 Million Steps – then climbed Scafell Pike to finish.

Back in 2020, while the country was in lockdown, one of our supporters set herself a challenge that we still love telling people about. Susan decided to walk one million steps from her own front door – and raise one million pennies for 3 Million Steps along the way.

Where the idea came from

In 2019 Susan joined Zara and Ian for a day on their John O’Groats to Land’s End walk, just as they passed 900 miles. That one day added around 24,000 steps to their total – and it got her thinking. What if she could walk a million steps without ever leaving home by car?

A million steps from home

Keeping within the lockdown rules, Susan set off from her door onto the long-distance paths of Surrey and Sussex – the Sussex Border Path, the Downs Link, the Greensand Way and the North Downs Way – with the OS Maps app (a birthday present from her children) to guide her. Her husband Geoff joined her on many of the walks.

By 4 July she had walked 1,005,000 steps, helped along by blue skies and glorious countryside.

Capped off at the top of England

Not content with a million, Susan finished her challenge on 31 July 2020 by climbing Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain – bringing her total to 1,064,000 steps.
