“Weβre helping to provide the equipment and services needed by brain injury survivors and their carers so they can concentrate on their recovery after discharge and once again live with dignity, self-worth and return to being a valued member of society and their families.”
WINNER OF THE STEPHEN McALEESE AWARD FOR INSPIRATION 2025
UKABIF Time for Change Summit
Zara was recognised by UKABIF for her fundraising and efforts in raising awareness for brain injuries.
The panel of judges were overwhelmed by Zara and how she has dedicated herself and coordinated fundraising efforts for the charity ever since her ABI. They mentioned the wide range of community events, promoting brain injury recovery awareness and raising funds to help others in their own recoveries.
Travel and new experiences have always been something Ian and Zara loved. Zaraβs brain injury caused a pause, but not the endβjust a few adjustments.
To celebrate their 2nd wedding anniversary, they carried on exploring new places: above and below Naples, up an active volcano, on a challenging wander through the ancient streets of Pompeii, refueled πand stepped out along the scenic shores near Marbella (with plenty of rest in the air conditioning too π).
Travelling with an ABI/TBI? It might take a little more planning, but amazing adventures are still possible. β€οΈ
When planning your trip, think about:
βοΈ 1. What type of holiday do you want, and where?
π 2. What are your top priorities? What do you really want to see and do?
π· 3. Consider the logistics and your budget.
Now, go back through those same questions with your brain injury in mind:
π Fatigue (build in rest breaks)
π Overstimulation (plan quiet time)
π Mobility and accessibility needs
π Processing new environments and situations
Remember to:
β
Allow extra time for everything.
β
Arrange suitable travel insurance.
β
Accept that you probably canβt do everythingβand thatβs okay.
Reassess your priorities and budget, and remember itβs perfectly fine for your travel companions to explore while you rest. Looking after yourself means youβll enjoy the moments that matter most.
Travel may look different after an ABI/TBI, but it can still be full of joy, new experiences, and unforgettable memories. Go at your own pace, celebrate what you can do, and remember that the best adventures are the ones that leave you smiling, not exhausted. πβοΈ
